Coetzee's novel Disgrace. The aim with the essay is to explore to what extent C.G.Jung's theory on the process of individuation is applicable on the protagonist in the novel, David Lurie. The study is done through an in-depth reading of the novel with a Psychoanalytic approach. Archetypal patterns as the shadow and the anima figure are explored, primarily, in the dreams and the fantasies of the protoganist. The essay starts by giving a brief introduction to C.G.Jung and his theory on psychological maturity and then it dwells on the analyzing of the Jungian features; the shadow and the anima, in the novel. The conclusion of the essay shows that the Jungian theory on the process of individuation is applicable on the protoganist David Lurie.
