Description
Summary:  The english name of this essay is ”One man among many women”. This essay takes its starting point in the situation today with few male teachers in the earlier years of elementary school. I have decided to look at the small group of males that actually started the education to become teachers and why they did it when the profession as teacher today is low-paid, low status and is a profession with a large dominance of female teachers. I have chosen to write about this because of the importance for the children to meet both men and women as teachers in the early schoolyears. I am myself one of few men that are studying to become a teacher in the elementary school. The purpose is to see which motives and driving forces that have had an influence on the male teacherstudents. The purpose is also to see if their social background have had an influence on their choice of education and profession. The theoretic perspective is that the profession as a teacher is a small choice of education because of the lack of different occupational branches and that the men and women that are starting the education today has a different background, both social and educational in comparison with earlier years. The teacherprofession is today low-paid and not very attractive. If you look at the dominance of female teachers, you can see that it is almost total, with a percentage och over 80% of females that during the last 30 years has started the education to become compulsory school teachers. When you see this numbers you realize that there can´t be many male teachers in the schools today. When you choose to become a teacher you also choose to be identified with a poor status. My choice of method has been to do a qualitative inspection by making interviews with mal teacherstudents at Linnéuniversitetet in Växjö. The result of the essay is that the primary motive and driving force to choose to become a compulsory school teacher is that they want to work with children and their development in school. They have not chosen the profession because of their interest in any specifiv subjects. I can see that none of them has any larger dreams or goals to make a big career. All of them are really certain of their choice and that they don´t care what people say about their choice of profession.
