Summary: | The aim of this study was to find out how young people perceive and experience the Swedish manualized family therapy method: Intensive Homebased Family therapy (IHF), a method that is implemented and used in several municipalities and organizations around Sweden. The main focus was to find out if the adolescents thought that the intervention was helpful and in what ways they were being involved in the treatment. A mixed method design was used where surveys were combined with semi-structured interviews. Nineteen adolescents aged 13 to 18 who recently had ended or was in the final stage of the treatment answered an online survey and out of those who answered the survey, six participants aged 13 to 17 were interviewed online. The findings show that the adolescents were overall content with the treatment and in particular with having their own youth therapist. The therapist helped and supported them both individually and in relation to their parents and facilitated their involvement and active participation in the treatment. The findings also show that the adolescents could influence the treatment which was important for them feeling heard and respected. They also appreciated the way the joint sessions were helpful in communicating with their parents. Lastly, findings suggest that it is important with flexibility and ongoing adjustments in treatment to make young people feel more comfortable and less stressed. |
