Should the ship'srudder servo shut down, this means that the ship must be maneuverered by handwith a manual steering pump, placed on the bridge.Navigation equipment, VHF and lanterns switch on and get their voltage from theship's UPS. The second generator that is on standby does not start automatically inthe event of a blackout but must be started locally and then switched on manually.During these minutes it takes to start another generator, the ship’s manoeuvrabilityis limited.The author has therefore been commissioned by Lars Fors at the University ofMaritime Studies to be given a project plan with intermediate goals for anemergency generator installation on the school ship Calmare Nyckel. Thesesubgoals have been answered and processed in accordance with laws andregulations for vessels in near coast shippingThe work is a complete plan for an installation of the emergency generator onCalmare Nyckel.
