The trend has been pointing strait up, but what each company must consider is their own requirements and needs. Far from all companies are ready for a central warehouse, it takes a big structural change in the organization to take advantage of a centralization. Gardin & Persson AB is a company with more than 100 years of tradition in Jamtland. The last couple of years the corporation has expanded in Vasterbotten with one store in Umea and one in Ornskoldsvik. They have also bought the business system SAP to make the sharing of information between the companies easier. To take the step towards a central warehouse has been discussed since the expansion, but for building a base for the decision this report has been done. When the business system was introduced the corporation took thire first major step against a more centralized business. A study of a common assortment has just started which is seen as therefore step number two. That GP wants to take advantage of being one company is certain. The questions treated in this report are whether or not the corporation can handle the organizational changes. Both transport planning and the purchasing unit will change completely. There are several benefits with centralization. The company can draw benefits of better vendor deals and lower inventory levels. The big tradeoff is between the increased transportation costs and the decreased tied up capital, improved vendor deals and other reduced logistics expenses. We recommend the company to continue with the investments in a centralized inventory structure. Measures that GP must take are to find a common assortment and to find a lasting transportation solution between the central warehouse and the stores. This demands better documentation of which routines that different tasks should include. A solid study of what SAP is used for today and which unused features that is available must also be done.
