Description
Summary:East side of Uppsala is neglected in terms of city life and mix of uses. The problem outline can be summed into lack of spatiality, little diversity and an unsustainable traffic situation. These problems are set against challenges to integrate the eastern parts of Uppsala around Vaksalagatan at the same time as concern is taken to the already existing parts. The main issue is to conclude a proposal for development of the street and the surroundings. In the master plan for the city there are intentions  o develop sort of a city corridor along Vaksalagatan but there are also suggestions  hat oppose these intentions. This thesis work is made in unity with the municipal  ffice of strategic planning in Uppsala and in that unity some starting points has been set up. Besides these starting points an analysis of the area has been made to create a platform from which the argumentation can take place. The argumentation for the development proposal in turn is based on literature mainly from three different urban theorists: Jane Jacobs, Jan Gehl and Douglas Farr. The outcome of the thesis work is a proposal of strategic progress that is mainly built uparound the problem outline. General measures include infill development in the large modestly used spaces along Vaksalagatan with mixed uses. Also the order of priority between different kinds of traffic is implemented by establishing a light rail track along the street and make room for bicycle lanes and wide sidewalks. To sum up it is concluded that there is ever so possible to develop the area along Vaksalagatan towards a more diverse and lively area. It is a big project but the conditions for success are absolutely there.
