Summary: | The purpose of this study is to discover how the teachers recognize students understanding of fractions and calculating with fractions and I want to learn more about which working methods they think are important to rise the understanding of fractions and calculating with fractions. The method I used to get answers was a qualitative survey with interviews. I interviewed in all ten teachers and teachers for special needs education. I discovered that hands-on material in different shapes and easy comprehends tutorial were important elements to create understanding of fractions and calculating with fractions. The two key elements that many teachers expressed were that the students were allowed to work in pairs and/ or in small groups with pictures of e.g. cakes and chocolate bars, and hands-on work with blocks, Cuisenaire sticks and cut-out material. Games were also helpful elements. It seems that students who have problems to discover relations between the physical and the abstract get help from hands-on material in various forms. |
