The aim of this study is to investigate the notions of 5-year olds regarding the decomposition in our nature. Eight children were interviewed for the study. Using individual semi-structured interviews and literature studies I have pursued answers to question such as; What are the notions of the children regarding decomposition of the leaves? What are the notions of the children regarding the leaves? Which materials do the children believe are decompositable in nature? Thereafter the ecological process notions of the children were summarised and categorised. The survey shows that all the children know what leaves are and where they can be found. Some of the children have notions regarding what happens with the leaf after falling to the ground. However, none of the children were familiar with the decomposition process in our nature in itself. Their common way of thinking is mirrored in the answers which do not contain any scientific conceptions. Hence, the conclusion to be drawn from the study of the dissertation is that the pedagogue should try to focus on more practical education in the scientific subjects making them accessible to all preschool children, as well as clarify the aim and goal before the practical work is started.
