Description
Summary:The purpose of the study was to identify and analyse the implications of client virtualisation in company environments. The study chose to focus on the aspects of the current hardware, license management, application management, maintenance work and the implications virtualization would have on these. The work in the study was chosen to limit itself to a Windows environment. The background to the study was due to a growing need to be more flexible and mobile in company environments and in collaboration with the University of Jönköping a problem description and the framing of questions was defined. The essay tooka qualitative initiative to comprehend the complexity of the problem at hand. The empirical data was collected from interviews, literature studies and laboratory work testing applications. The analytical part was worked out to be thedata from the literature studiesand interview weight against the laboratory work. This was donetogetconfirmation from more than one source. The results where sorted out to the corresponding frame of question which showedthat the hardware available on today’s market would suffice well to run a fully operational virtualization environment with the less demanding applications while the results of the more demanding applications where not as promising. The hardware available for the heavy application had no GPU available and this made the results a bit misleading but gave some interesting analytical material to the essay. The laboratory work with the application virtualization did not give a conclusive result dueto failed attempts to reproduce the environment more than one by reasons unknown. The maintenance work will be able to gothrough some changes with the work towards templates in comparison with the older tools but the older tools are not discarded in the system. The license management will as it is not change in any remarkable way but in some cases it will have to be more cautious about the choices of models. The application management will have the option to change more to a centralized point and work more with templates and packet publishing The discussion shows a positive impression of the technology on most aspects that it provides a lot of new tools and doesn’t exclude the old. The discussion also draws the conclusions that the hardware would be able to handle a large amount of clients and possibly even heavier applications if the server where given access to a GPU but this is purely speculative.
