Summary: | Edsbyverken Office Furniture has over the past 100 years been producing delicate carpentry products, chairs and skiis, but more recently the focus has shifted to furniture for the modern office environment. With a wide selection of products and its characteristic neutral design, Edsbyverken has an extensive group of clients both in Sweden and internationally. The aim of my C level thesis project was to examine the materials Edsbyverken is currently using in order to develop new designs or product functions. Simultanesously, I also wanted to verify whether the method I developed for this project - to initially undertake a comprehensive study of the chosen materials and thereafter specialise on a certain product and target audience – was effective and successful. Through site visits, a literature review and interviews with key personell the theoretic foundation for the project was established. I have throughout the project focused on Edsbyverken’s material choices and products and by studying the skilled carpenters at Edsbyverken, as well as other sectors and products, I got inspiration for new and alternative ways of using materials and products. After analysis of the theoretical findings, I selected the materials and products that I wanted to bring forward in this project. The outcome of this work is a product with a simple design and intriguing details – Lindesk. The purpose of my product is to increase the sense of wellbeing and comfort while in large premises and rooms. Since my method was based on the material choice, my product may differ from an eqivalent product with only Edsbyverken’s target audience in mind. The benefits of this method is that significant consideration was taken to the material’s characteristics and my expectation is thus that the material is utilised and enjoyed to the greatest extent possible.
