To study this, we have conducted five semistructured interviews with students who newly immigrated to Sweden. The basis of the analysis is grounded in theories about social capital form Robert D. Putnam and Bo Rothstein and social trust from Rothstein and Carina Gunnarson. We found in our interviews that a lack of social capital and social trust led to a lower level of integration, and that the interviewed students who had the lowest level of integration also had a significantly lower trust for institutions. However, a lack of social trust for other members of society didn’t always result in a low integration. This study also presents thoughts and ideas how teachers and schools can overcome some of the obstacles in regard to integration between newly immigrated student and the school system.
