Using robot assistance allows the surgeon to perform surgical procedures using remote-controlled mechanic arms. The advantages of practicing this technique during surgeries are improved accuracy, clearer visualization, better utilization of the instruments and the elimination of human errors, e.g. tremor. A technique that entails revolutionary benefits is nevertheless not adopted by many surgeons, due to lack of acceptance. The purpose of this academic study is to receive a more in-depth understanding of the relevant factors behind the reluctance of implementing robot-assisted surgical procedures. Additionally, we are interested in investigating which factor is the most significant for the overall consensus behind the new innovation. However, this study includes the hostility from the users’ perspective on this technology and how this would influence future decisions. Three separate methods of empirical evidence are used in this study and they are analyzed qualitatively. Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) is chosen with the purpose of being inspired and a proposal of developing the model is submitted. This study is addressed to the scientific field consisting of researchers focusing on robots, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the digitalization of labor. The selection of participants has been implemented in regard to the purpose of the study with a contact person from Intuitive Surgical. The results indicate how the respondents have a positive preference toward this technology. Furthermore, it is evident how the lack of sufficient investments is the main challenge for implementing this technology at additional medical institutions across Sweden. Moreover, both surgeons and surgical-nurses believe their professions will be affected by the continued influence of digitalization within the Swedish healthcare. The results from this study could be beneficial for senior leadership at medical institutions in order to further underline the advantages of the robot.
