Summary:Measurements of velocity of propagation and damping of transverse sonic waves have been made for aluminum soap-hydrocarbon gels. The frequency range covered is 100 to 1000 cycles per second. The experimental results have been fitted to theoretical mechanical models. The mechanical behavior of the gels investigated can be approximated by a Retarded Maxwell Element with a ratio of parallel to series viscosity of about 0.01. The rigidity of the model isof the order of 10³ dynes per square centimeter and the series viscous component of the order of 1 to 10 poise, giving a relaxation time of the order of 10¯³ seconds. === Science, Faculty of === Physics and Astronomy, Department of === Graduate
