Nonlinear motion of a vessel in a seaway

This work considers the nonlinear motion of a ship in waves. Common linear techniques have been examined to determine the possibility of extending them to predict nonlinear ship motion. Both physical and numerical modelling techniques were used to study the motion of ships in waves. These li...

Common linear techniques have been examined to determine the possibility of extending them to predict nonlinear ship motion. Both physical and numerical modelling techniques were used to study the motion of ships in waves. These linear techniques were evaluated and compared against one another. The limitations of these methods were found, and a detailed discussion regarding their limitations given for both the estimation of the linear motion and the capabilities of being extended into the realms of nonlinear motion prediction. Most of the current techniques are incapable of predicting the nonlinear motion of a vessel in waves. More work is required to overcome the shortcomings for both physical and numerical modelling of the nonlinear motion of a vessels in waves.
