The genetic analysis of factors influencing the lethality associated with the scute inversions of Drosophila melanogaster

It has been previously established that inviability is associated with X/0 males carrying a scute inversion X chromosome. Description
Summary:It has been previously established that inviability is associated with X/0 males carrying a scute inversion X chromosome. Explanations of this phenomenon suggest that the lethality may be due to a position effect suppression of the rRNA cistrons. This thesis provides an alternative explanation of the scute X/0 lethality and provides support for the primary function of the scute locus. These studies indicate that the lethality associated with the scute X/0 genotype is conditional and dependent upon the parental origin of the X chromosome. Numerous experiments indicate that the lethality results from a disfunction of the scute locus rather than the rRNA cistrons. === Science, Faculty of === Zoology, Department of === Graduate
