Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北藝術大學 === 管絃與擊樂研究所 === 108 === This thesis is focus on American composer Elliott Carter’s Eight Pieces for Four Timpani (one player) in order to make discussion and analysis, which had made important foundation and great effect of contemporary percussion solo music development in the 20th century. Moreover, it deals with musical notations, the uses of musical ideas, applications and developments of skills on the timpani.
For the demonstration of how this piece became one of historical integral timpani solo repertoire, this thesis consists of 6 parts: First is the introduction of this thesis, combined with general background information, research motive and purpose. Then is the main part of the thesis, concludes 4 chapters: First chapter demonstrates the biography of American composer Elliott Carter and his composition style development during his lifetime; second chapter is the introduction of Eight Pieces for Four Timpani (one player), with its composing background and the revision with one of famous American percussionist Jan Williams; Third and fourth chapter focus on the analysis of musical structures and the interpretations of Eight Pieces, furthermore within the relation of interval uses, material developments, phrase subdivisions, tempi connections with metric modulation, and suggestions of practically practice and performance. Finally, the last part is the conclusion of this thesis.
