This study proposed the concept of eye-controlled responsive interface; explored the development of applying eye-controlled system to mobile devices. We verified the feasibility of this concept through a pilot study, and investigated the effect of target size and visual distance on user experience of operating an eye-controlled interface. The results of the pilot study showed that different combinations of visual distances and target sizes affect both selection time and task load. In terms of visual distance, the results between objective performance and subjective feelings are opposite. Moreover, regardless of the difference of visual distance, the larger targets can improve the subjective feelings and reduce cognitive loads, and the larger targets reduced the impact of visual distance on operation performance and user experience. To improve the development efficiency of responsive interface, the interface design of this study was based on grid system. This study was focused on layout design of button area, and we proposed 16 layouts for exploration. Through the experimental tests, we got the data of reaction time and workload of each layout. The following are main conclusions of this study. First, layout will not affect the reaction time of a single button but total reaction time of an interface. Secondly, there is no interaction between button size and position. Position will not affect the reaction time, but button size will affect the reaction time. Moreover, layout will affect not only subjective preferences but also workload. Based on the experimental conclusions, the research recommendations of layout design in the eye-controlled responsive interface were given at the end of this study.
