This is especially true in Miaoli County, where they have survived for a century. As the foundation of wealth and prosperity for Miaoli, clay work is an industry of cultural and historical significance, much more than its current economic potential. Due to increased material and human costs, business owners sought overseas business moving opportunities or importing cheap products of a less desirable quality, which led to the reduced industry size. This study is aimed to provide a feasible development strategy to re-invigorate this local legacy. The study methodologies include publication analysis, focused group and in-depth interviews. Publication analysis is conducted to understand the prior advantages and current challenges of the ceramic industry in Miaoli. Focused groups and in-depth interviews are conducted to collect expert opinions from the industry, authority, academic and research aspects. Data analysis based on grounded theory is used in encoding to summarize the six strategic dimensions for the ceramic industry in Miaoli: utilization of abundant raw materials, integration of local ceramic-related industries, development of features, establishing cross-disciplinary connections with cultural and creative efforts or tourism, facilitating the establishment of Miaoli Ceramic Culture and Art Platform, and the improvements required. It is expected that the experience in tourism factories will assist in said connections and platform establishment for collaborated transition to a featured business model. It is also hoped that this model will drive the momentum of tourism and agritourism, which will in turn provide more work opportunities for local residents and boosts economic activities.
