With the current prevalence of the Chinese language, foreigners who wish to learn Chinese can acquire numerous free resources from the Internet. However, learning systems with unfavorable interactive designs cause learners to spend additional energy on system operation and experience frustration. This study thoroughly examined the interactive design of writing practice in a Chinese learning system. The aim was to enhance the usability of the system and user efficiency in learning Chinese characters. The study was divided into three stages. In the first stage, a survey was conduced on the current status of Chinese learning to select participants with favorable performance and test the usability of the system. In the second stage, the interactive design of a writing practice system was proposed, and improvements were made to the interactive design of writing practice and score feedback functions. In the final stage, the developed system was examined using learning outcome assessments and user satisfaction surveys. The research results of this study are as follows: 1. A survey was performed on the current status of Chinese learning to compile eight essential elements of Chinese character writing systems, namely presentation media, writing practice, grid lines, tracing, stroke order labels, display control, display speed control, and color labels. 2. Participants were invited to perform usability analysis on the writing practice system, thereby understanding the opinions and viewpoints of users regarding operation and interaction of such systems. Moreover, this study observed the use habits and common mistakes of users to compile design principles for Chinese character writing systems. 3. The developed writing system not only improves problems concerning the interactive design of existing systems, but also features new learning interaction functions developed according to user learning strategies and related education theories. 4. Because predicting the types and number of mistakes made by users during writing practice was difficult, this study developed an algorithm to address problems related to stroke orders, thereby improving the interactivity of the system. 5. Foreign students were invited to participate in learning outcome experiments and user satisfaction surveys for the developed system. The results verified that the interactive design of the system improved students’ learning outcomes. Accordingly, this study created guidelines for developing the interactive design of Chinese character learning systems to provide a reference for related developers in the future.
