Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 化學工程與材料工程系 === 107 === Traditional treatment of bone fracture uses internal metal fixture. However, it is not biodegradable and its mechanical strength is large to make the body uncomfortable. Therefore, the internal metal fixture need to be removed through second surgery after the bone fracture healing. The aim of this study was to develop a biodegradable internal fixture for bone fracture. It does not need to be removed after it implants in the body. Firstly, calcium sulfate hemihydrate, gelatin and alginate were well mixed, coated on the gauze and dried to obtain a biodegradable internal fixture. The fixture was spread with water before fixing the bone fracture. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the fixture contains mainly of calcium sulfate hemihydrate and few amount of calcium sulfate hemihydrate, while it contains only calcium sulfate hemihydrate after spreading water on gauze. It indicates that few amount of calcium sulfate hemihydrate was converted to calcium sulfate dehydrate during mixing and drying process. Cell toxicity assay revealed the fixture was non-toxic. The bending strength of fractured bone treated with biodegradable fixture and normal bone is 290 and 155N, respectively It suggests that the strength of the biodegradable internal fixture is enough to support the body weight during bone healing.
