Hence, Academia Sinica participated in conference of Ladies’ Journal , accomplished 17 volumes of catalogues of Ladies’ Journal, published research number of Ladies’ Journal and collected the images of the original publication in Modern History Databases. Nevertheless, most of the studies analyzed the content of the texts of Ladies’ Journal. Therefore, based on images, this study explores the relationship between Ladies’ Journal and the times. It first probes into women history. Thus, it realizes that the publication of Ladies’ Journal was launched in the society with frequent exchange of Chinese and western cultures, progress of printing technology and new knowledge acquisition. It focused on women and adopted the communication of new knowledge as the responsibility. The development of the publication was divided into three states: “1915.1-1919.10”, “1919.11-1925.8”, and “1925.9-1931.12 ”. Based on iconology, the findings are shown below: (1) types of layout include cover, title, contents, advertising, picture/illustration, chapters, content and space. (2) Types of images include illustration, photography, figures and lines, and statistical diagrams and tables. (3) Images support the content of articles, convey the information as the themes, reinforce and reorganize the structure of layout, fill in the space of the pages, highlight content of texts and present advertising situations. (4) Themes of images can be elaborated by decoration and appreciation, information and knowledge and products of advertising to explain the meanings of images. (5) Based on cultural assets and evaluation indicators of cultural value, this study analyzes iconological meanings of different themes of images and realizes that when we extract certain key elements from cultural assets such as images, the connection between the said elements and cultural discussion is not halted and it reinforces the cultural association of the said cultural asset. Based on the above, through images, this study realizes that the connection between Ladies’ Journal and the times is mainly shown in “knowledge progress and vision expansion of the times”, “change of the public life style”, “business prosperity and competition” , “tolerance and conflict of multiple cultures and thoughts” and “investigation and communication of woman’s liberation”. In order to complement this study which did not probe into all images and complete the research of the related field, it suggests that the following researchers can probe into images of “advertising products” with association with modern social context, the composition of the four major image forms, and discuss with experts the image meaning and cultural value.
