SA is also considered to be one of the risk factors for dementia. It is known that patients with dementia have autonomic dysfunction, but there are few studies on the autonomic function of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) that is the early stage of dementia. The results are inconsistent and also doesn’t include assessing sleep apnea, which is the risk factor for dementia. However, it is unclear whether the association between MCI and autonomic function is different in the severity of SA symptoms, and the association between SA symptoms of different severity and autonomic function in MCI patients. Hypothesis: MCI patients and control group had different autonomic regulation under different severity of SA symptoms Aim: To compare the prevalence of SA symptoms between the MCI group and the control group, and to explore the relationship between severity of SA symptoms and autonomic function in two groups. Materials and Methods: 20 MCI patients and 14 controls were recruited. Oxygen desaturation index (ODI) was analyzed by bluetooth oximeter to detect the severity of SA symptoms. A portable electrocardiography (ECG) recorder was used to analyze heart rate variability (HRV) to detect autonomic function during sleep. Results: Compare autonomic function in two group. When they both have the severe SA symptoms (ODI ≥ 15), the total power (TP) activity of HRV, which is the overall autonomic function, were significantly lower in MCI group. We compare the autonomic function of different SA symptoms in MCI group. The MCI in severe SA symptom showed significantly lower activity in TP and high frequency power (HF) of HRV, that represent the parasympathetic activity. In the correlation analysis between ODI and autonomic function, TP, HF and ODI in MCI group were negatively correlated. Conclusion: The patients with MCI and severe SA symptoms had overall autonomic and parasympathetic dysfunction. The autonomic dysfunction was associated with the severity of SA symptoms in MCI group.
