To examine whether smoking relapse after smoking abstinence associate with quitting trajectories and smoking cessation medications.
Methods
We identified 2,668 quitters from the 6-month follow-up phone interview who abstinent at least 1 month between March 2012 and January 2015 at the Taiwan Smoking Cessation Program. Quitting trajectories of successful quitters who first receiving smoking medications were identified, immediate quitters (n=1,378) and delayed quitters (n=1,290). Among successful quitters, there are 1,340 nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) users, 141 bupropion users and 1,187 varenicline users. The outcomes of the study was 1-year relapse rate. We established a model to estimate the odds of relapse comparing the quitting trajectories and smoking cessation medications.
Results
The 1-year rate of relapse was 23.1% for the study group; delayed quitters, 29.8% versus immediate quitters, 16.7% (OR=2.11, 95%CI=1.73-2.56). No smoking cessation medications differences were observed to associate with relapse rate.
Conclusions
Immediate quitters were shown to be associated with lower rates of relapse than delayed quitters. Therefore, it is important to professionals encouraging and helping smokers to quit smoking immediately and monitored the smokers’ quitting trajectories in order to keep them from returning to smoking status.
