Methods: Twelve Level-1 college field hockey players were recruited as subjects, who shot the goal in three different skills:drag flick, hitting the ball and sweeping the ball with a distance of 30, 60, and 90 cm. Two cameras with a sampling rate of 240 Hz, a laser gun and an accelerometer, which were attached on the stick, were used to collect the action time, offset, ball speed, and the vibration of stick. Finally, the repeated measures two-way ANOVA was used to compare the differences among the distances and skills. Results: The drag flick skill with a distance of 30 cm had the higher ball speed, lower offset and longer action time; the hitting ball skill with at a distance of 60 cm had higher ball speed, lower offset, shorter action time and back swing time as well; the sweeping ball skill with a distance of 90 cm had higher ball speed, lower offset, longer back swing time and shorter acceleration time; the vibration of stick was the lowest with a distance of 30 cm and by using the skill of drag flick. Conclusion: The corresponding shooting skill should be used with different distances from the ball in order to have better shooting performance: 30 cm can be used to drag flick, 60 cm can be used to hit the ball, and 90 cm can be used to sweep the ball. If the shooter only wants to use his habitual shooting skill, he needs to choose the appropriate distance to shoot the goal during penalty corners. However, if the shooter's skill is more comprehensive, he can choose one of the appropriate shooting skills according to the distance from the ball during penalty corners.
