Several articles that best reflect this distinguishing feature and the aura are selected from Lu Xin’s novels Scream, Wandering, New Stories, the prose poem Wild Grass, and the prose Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk as the analytical texts to examine the ways of his expression and to interpret the meanings and values of his work.
There are five chapters in this study. In the Introduction Chapter, research motivation and purpose, research scope and research methods are explained. Lu Xun’s the backgrounds of his growth and the deepest influences of Chinese and Western cultures and thoughts on him will also be revealed. The influences of Chinese culture are the style of Wei Jin Dynasty and local culture of Zhedong. The modern thinking of western cultures such as Nietzsche and Russian literature has affected Lu Xun a lot. These Chinese and Western impacts on Lu Xun’s self-character and his thinking style are analyzed and discussed accordingly in the next chapter.
The second chapter, ‘Lu Xun's Dilemma of Love and Hatred,’ will discuss his entanglement of love and hatred. In Section One, The Price of Love, Lu Xun’s sympathy for the bottom farmers is primarily stated. Lu Xun’s love and resentment toward ignorant peasants can be sensed in Medicine and Tomorrow. In Section Two, Hatred Because of Love, Lu Xun disclosed and criticized about the bystanders in Showing the Public, Kong Yiji and The True Story of Ah Q. In Section Three, Love and Hatred, Lu Xun's love and lament for his hometown is experienced from the Hometown and Blessings.
Chapter Three, Hope after Despair, analyzes Lu Xun’s attitudes toward hope and despair. Section One,To Make Something out of Nothing, explores Lu Xun’s unique concept of “being out of nothing.” Lu Xun created“something” in“none” through Seeking the Seekers and Farewell to the Shadows. In Section Two, Against Desperation, Lu Xun’s inner struggles and a determined attitude to rebel against “desperation” are revealed in Hope, Snow and Dead Fire. Section Three, Face the Death Then Reborn, demonstrates that Lu Xun breaks through the limitations of death with self-destructive revenge and the attitude of taking a way to death as a rebirth in The Solitary, Forging the Swords and Revenge that he completed to purify his mind, growth and healing.
Chapter Four, Worry about Life and Death, investigates Lu Xun’s unique views and attitudes toward life and death. Section One, Questioning throughout His Life, illustrates Lu Xun's inner monologue and questioning of the meanings of life from Tavern and The Solitary. In Section Two, Roaming without Rest, Lu Xun's self-repentance and his determination to go to the unknown are exposed in Sadness and Passenger. Section Three, Absurdity of Life and Vanish of Death, states Lu Xun’s travel through ancient and modern times across life and death in Resurrect the Dead, Impermanence and Epitaph. He eliminates death and gets rebirth by different forms of life.
Chapter Five, Conclusion, sums up the central thinking of this research from the previous chapters, then discusses the self-reflection in Lu Xun’s work and what ‘The Aura ofLu Xun’ is. Finally, the artistic effects of both self-reflection in Lu Xun’s work and ‘The Aura of Lu Xun’ in the texts and literary values they convey will be concluded.
