Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北藝術大學 === 舞蹈研究所 === 107 === Abstract This research explored a case study involving a single family in which all four brothers are dancers to understand whether they could pursue their love of dance despite struggles on the dance career road in a gender-imbalanced dance environment. According to Risner (2008), a significant portion of the dominant culture usually associates the word “dance” with women and feminine qualities, labeling dance as a female activity. Indeed, the overwhelming majority of the student population engaged in dance is female. For men, the social construction of gender roles plays an important role in their participation in and attitude toward dance, which leads to the dilemma of their choice of dance. This study used a case study to collect extensive data on the life experiences of the research targets through in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed to address three research purposes: the dance-learning process and career planning of the four brothers in the case, the influence of their parents on the four brothers’ dance path, and an academic reflection on the gender ratio imbalance among dancers. The study found that the four brothers’ dancing was enlightened in the dance studio and rooted in the dance educational system; their parents adopted various attitudes when creating a dance path for the four brothers. Finally, the researcher conducted a self-reflection to understand the research process and the researcher herself better. Keywords: male dancer, gender role
