He inherits the classical spirit of Italy since the Renaissance, and uses Greek and Roman sculptures as a model. By incorporating the spirit of the times and the innovation of engraving techniques, Canova's sculptures have both classical and innovative qualities. The carving style of Canova belonged to the late Baroque style at the beginning, and the journey to Rome in 1779 was the start of style changes. To analyze the transformation of Canova's style in detail, study the Canova sculptures in order is required. Therefore, this study begins with the background of the era and the artistic career of Canova, and then dividing Canova's life into three stages, the early stage of Canova's creation, starting of neoclassical creation and establishing the classical characteristics of self. By exploring the changes in stages of Canova’s carving works, and the comparison between the sculptures of Canova and the works of the predecessors, can clarify the context of the classical traits of Canova sculpture, and the classical traits established in the carvings of Canova. Canova sculptures, integration of classical essence and new ideas and techniques are the originality that generally lack in the wave of replicating archaeological art. Canova is ingenious in the triangle composition and fits into the inner meaning. With exquisite carving skills and the unique interpretation of the heroes is the characteristic of Canova carvings, also the main reason why sculptures are unique.
