The effect of the four brands of eraser for the traditional and non-traditional total of eight types on paper is studied. These eight types of eraser were first tested for components and hardness by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis (XRF), and a hardness tester. Then, the papers wiped by these erasers and divided into three categories are tested for different items. 1. Whatman® Qualitative Filter Paper Grade NO.1 is not processed. It is wiped with the different erasers by using the friction tester and then subjected to measure surface roughness before and after aging by using the shape analysis laser microscopy. Using colorimeter, it's to test the color difference. Using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), it's to detect the residual degree. Using the pH tester, it's to detect the change of pH. 2. Whatman® Qualitative Filter Paper Grade NO.1 is wiped with the erasers by using the friction tester after applying toner. Then, using the colorimeter, it's to test the color difference and the cleanliness of paper with the different erasers. 3. The black sika paper wiped with the erasers by using the friction tester is to test the difference in the gloss and roughness with comparing the differences in different erasers. Therefore, when cleaning the cultural relics, we could evaluate four types of commercial erasers used in conservation, which type of erasers is more suitable, through comparing with the gloss, chromatic aberration, cleanliness, roughness, residue between the eraser and the paper.
