She works in photography, fictional storytelling, and ceramics as her mediums and makes spaces with video projection and photo books as her forms of creation. She uses the two concepts of Kinstugi (golden joinery), which are mending and inheriting of broken ceramics, as a metaphor for reconstructing and forwarding the intangible memories of the family from the past to the future. Nao Uda argues that the creative process and artworks function to mend, reconstruct, and reinterpret fragmented family memories caused by death and the passage of time, and discusses how the memories will be passed down to future generations in her photographs, ceramics, and fictional stories. This thesis will consider the question, “Can fragmented memories of lost family members be mended, filled, reinterpreted, and passed down to future generations by applying the concepts of “kintsugi” (golden joinery) in photography, fictional stories, and ceramics?” Four artworks will be discussed in four chapters on the themes of “kintsugi,” “photography,” “fiction,” and “liaison,” in addition to the introduction and conclusion.
