In face of today's rapidly changing in environment market, environmental protection laws/regulations and sustainable development, the environmental protection equipment manufacturers must have the capability of product design and development. However, the domestic manufacturers of water treatment equipment still focus on traditional design/research capabilities, manufacturing technology and quality requirements. In order to enable decision makers to have a more comprehensive understanding in the development strategies of water treatment equipment, this study constructs an analysis model by decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and experts’ opinions. This study categorized the influencing factors into four dimensions and 18 factors. Through the experts’ opinions and the applied method, this study generated an influential network relationship map (INRM). The results show that the two highest causes are the project plan and the environmental protection laws/regulations. The design and development capabilities, manufacturing technology and quality requirements ranked 10, 15 and 13 among 18 factors, which has changed the concepts from decades ago.
