The existing studies investigating the intergenerational activities designed to eliminate intergenerational gaps mainly focused on the interactions among adolescents, adults, and the elderly, and were conducted using the workshops or camps composed of multiple people and volunteer activities. In addition, the existing studies mainly used one-way feedback data as the main research basis, so the results cannot be extended to daily life. This study combined the two-way reciprocal core spirit of scaffolding theory with game-based learning concept in order to implement “joint travel of children and the elderly” starting from grandparent-grandchild relationship to create media assisting the joint travel, conversations, and interactions between children and the elderly in daily life. the 5 research purposes are: (1) to investigate, summarize, and arrange the design principles that apply scaffolding concept to joint travel activities for children and the elderly; (2) to design the interactive toys conforming to the mutual joint travel and scaffolding game-based mechanism; (3) to invite experts to assess the design of the products created in this study; (4) to invite children and elderly users to experience the creation results of this study and to investigate the impacts of different scaffolds on interactions; (5) to collect users’ feedbacks to make the final creation modifications. In the end, this study actually displayed the creation results. This study used scaffolding theory as the basis, took into account commercialization, and conformed to the design guidelines for intergenerational games to create 1 toy of joint welfare for children and the elderly themed on 12 Chinese zodiac signs and Chinese legends and stories with 3 different scaffolding models and multiple game mechanisms. Besides, this study performed internal and external assessments, and proposed creation and research suggestions after modifying the design and actually displaying the toy.
