The data was collected from 1603 college students (807 males and 796 females). Results suggested that depression, peer influence and virtual social support could, directly and indirectly, predict Smartphone addiction mediated through SUEEC in both genders at the same time. Peer influence could only directly predict smartphone addiction in females, and virtual social support could only directly predict smartphone addiction in males. Parental support, directly and indirectly, predicted Smartphone addiction mediated through depression in both genders. In contrast to gender differences, males’ parental support could predict smartphone addiction directly. The findings provide evidence in illuminating gender differences in the pathway model how peer influence, virtual social support and parental support lead to smartphone addiction.
