Women’s original family is emphasized in Chinese society and different from western countries, is usually the priority people that battered woman call for help. However, our domestic violence service networks always only focus on the battered women. This study aims to delve into the women’s original family’s attitude on domestic violence women and experiences of responding and supporting battered women, and to understand the needs of the original family. From the prospective of social work, I will present the research suggestions and assistances to the original family.
According to research purposes, qualitative research techniques are adopted in this study. Semi-structural intensive interviews with six family members in the original family of domestic violence women are conducted, and “thematic analysis” is used to analyze interview data. The results of the study are as follows:
I. The closer original family and domestic violence woman is, the more supportive and longer it lasts. When the original family realizes the woman suffers domestic violence, family member will support and give aid to the woman until she disengage from violence. Members in original family even help to rebuild the woman’s live, and offer continual assistance with finance and residence.
II. The original family’s perspective of domestic violence has been changed, deviating from traditional philosophy. In this study, members in original family have no thought of “Once a girl has attached herself to one man, she must be faithful to him forever regardless of all circumstances.” Instead, they encourage and help domestic violence women to leave violent surrounding. Even though some women choose to stay in the intimate relationship, their original family still provide assistance continuously.
III. The assistance provided by the original family is similar to what domestic violence network offers nowadays, such as giving battered women emotional and financial support, short-term or long-term shelter, childcare, consultation and suggestions, etc.
IV. The original family helps battered woman is as the subject to be battered. This study has found that the original family is hurt as much as the woman. Facing capricious battered women, the original family felt sad and exhausted. They also run the risk of being attacked and revenged by the domestic violence offenders.
This study suggests that firstly, in practical aspect, the woman’s original family is both resource and victim. Domestic violence network should provide assistance to original family. Secondly, our government should advocate domestic violence network resources through mass media. Thirdly, in the aspect of legislation, related law revision is advised to include original family members as they are victims as well. Fourthly, in the aspect of academic, offspring should be considered original family members; meanwhile, battered man should have support system like original family.
