The author saw the reason for the tendency because it is difficult to understand the difference in meaning of synonymous conjunctions, e.g. “soshite”, ”sorekara”, ”mata” for Japanese learners by a pre -survey.
Thus the author defined a meaning of conjunctions “soshite”,”sorekara”,”mata” and ”conjunctive acquisition” means that Taiwanese Japanese learners (TJL) understand the difference in meaning of these three synonymous conjunctions in this study.
This study aims to elucidate the difficulties for TJL in the acquisition of conjunctions ”soshite”, ”sorekara”, ”mata”. In this study there are 3 researches by learner corpus analysis, analyzing TJL and textbook. The contents of each analysis are follows;
The author used cross-sectional data (International Corpus of Japanese as a Second Language) and longitudinal data (Language Acquisition Research Project at Soochow University).
The author surveyed a tendency that native speaker and TJL use what kind of conjunctions as well as the mistakes of TJL using conjunctions by analyzing cross-sectional data.
The result indicated that when TJL use conjunction for connecting sentences, they mostly use “soshite” and make less frequent use of “mata” and also they confuse the usage of “soshite” and ”sorekra” as the previous researches pointed out.
Besides, the author surveyed an influence between the mistakes of TJL using conjunctions and the time of their studying by analyzing longitudinal data.
The result showed that the studying time has little effect on the acquisition of conjunctions and the TJL’s mistakes has a similar tendency that analyzing by cross-sectional data.
The author used multiple-choice test and questionnaire for TJL research. The result indicated that TJL use “mata” in connecting sentences, but they confuse the usage of “mata” and ”soshite”, ”mata” and ”sorekara”. In addition to this, they decide conjunctions by the context.
The author seem that these results show following points;
1 The TJL understand that ”soshite” provides the meaning of continuity to the context.
2 The TJL understand that “mata” connects two sentences which have similar contents.
3 The TJL do not understand properly that “mata” and ”sorekara” provide separability to the context.
The author also analyzed Japanese textbooks that TJL were using. The result show that TJL’s understanding has been influenced by explanations of the conjunction “soshite”,”sorekara”,”mata” in their using textbooks. The result suggested textbook would be one of the important factors to the acquisition of the conjunction “soshite”,”sorekara”,”mata” for TJL.
