With its important values of history, religion and culture, the route has become a famous attraction for tourists in the world. The Way starts at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France and ends at Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The name of the Way is from one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus, James, who had dedicated all his life to the Catholic missions in Spain. According to the legends, after James dead, his body was buried in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and made this place into one of the three holy places in the world. In the past, this Way is not only a principal pilgrimage route for the Catholics, but also a way for European culture exchange. Over the last few years, owing to the abundance of tourism resources, the St. James Way attracts a lot of tourists every year and promotes the development of tourism for the cities along this route.
As time goes by, the St. James Way brings people precious histories, valuable arts and architecture. The 800-kilometer Way is just like an encyclopedia of culture, including numerous artworks, heritages, and also traditional local culture.
There are four main parts in this paper. First, the introduction of a legendary life of Apostle James. For second and third parts, we discuss the most prevalent artistic styles on the St. James Way: Romanesque art and Gothic art, and analyze the characteristics of art for the buildings on the pilgrimage road. In the last part, based on the viewpoints of Taiwanese, the St. James Way and the pilgrimage of Mazu are compared, in order to highlight the cultural values for these two pilgrimages.
