He has incorporated many aspects of Chinese northwestern folk songs and the traditional ethnic culture in his works. It has become a characteristic of his musical pieces. In the music of “Four Movements of Shanbei”, he also used many Errentai, Xintianyou, and Qinqiang Opera of the local Shanxi area as elements of his creation. This allows the music to express with greater emotions. It fully shows the thoughts of the composer when writing the music and the abundance of the music of the flute performance. This paper will mainly analyze and interpret Cheng Dazhao’s flute concerto “Four Movements of Shanbei”: the first movement “Xintianyou”, second movement “Shexi”,third movement “Wangshi” and fourth movement “Naohonghuo”. The author will delve into a deeper understanding through the composer’s musical background, the use of musical elements, the thinking behind his creation and his music style and categorize the Shanxi area’s types of music, unique characteristics, etc. The entire piece’s music structure and cadence will be analyzed horizontally using a table. Detailed explanation will be given in particular to the special musical methods used in the music and the motivation behind the theme. The writer will then explain and interpret based on her own feelings towards this piece of music and its style of performance.
