"Arriving Home"—The Creation of a Picture Book Based Animal Conservation

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed chimpanzees and bonobos as endangered species, with more and more species will soon become extinct. Pet abandonment has elicited much controversy when addressing the causes of stray animals in Taiwan. Pet owners buy or adopt their pets on a whim and choose to abandon them due to lack of awareness, or other reasons. if they did not allow others to adopt them, these pet owners would callously abandon their pets outdoors, jeopardizing these abandoned animals’ mental and physical health , leading to public concerns for traffic safety, noise, and environmental hygiene. In addition, pet abandonment jeopardizes the safety of other indigenous species in Taiwan. The motive for the creation of this picture book is “love your pets and avoid pet abandonment.” This creation is based on the synthesis of literature on “picture books,” “stray animal issues,” and “related picture books.” The aims of the book include the following: 1. To promote public awareness and understanding of pet abandonment through this project; 2. To create a picture book about animal welfare. This picture book was also exhibited in the “Hsianghsiang Dining Room” in Huwei. The conclusion of this book includes the following: 1. The organizion of an exhibition and discussion session through the publication of a picture book entitled Arriving Home to understand people’s concept of pet abandonment and to draw attention to pet abandonment through the book, Arriving Home; 2. The story narrative and composition are the most important and time-consuming parts in the process of creating Arriving Home. It is necessary for Arriving Home to express concepts concisely because published picture books do not contain many pages. The arrangements of “composition,” “technique,” “coloring,” and “implications” are of vital importance. It is expected that the process of this book may serve as a reference for other creators.
