Summary: | 博士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 建築系 === 107 === The issue on the development of contemporary urban sustainability can trace back to 1898. Ebenezer Howard proposed the concept of Garden City planning and the vision of utopia which had effects on the environment, social and economic aspects in the center of urban.
This study investigates the evolution and significance of neighborhood planning movements of early Nineteenth century. After that, we clarify the relationship between theory and practice with six practices developing “systems for sustainable cities” to obtain a clear understanding of the sustainable development of contemporary cities. The core of this study is excerpted from literature reviews, which meanwhile have resulted in multiple-perspective analysis for urban research. Through analyzing internationally renowned neighborhood sustainability assessment (NSA) tools and case studies of Asian eco-cities, this study concludes as follows:
1. Green technology integration should avoid falling into the framework of physical determinism, adopt the model that is diverse, and integrate local resources.
2. Assessment tools are developed to ensure flexibility and allow public
participation to reduce rigidities and professional arrogance.
3. Develop a bilateral collaboration with a thinking of governance.
This study makes it even clearer that the development trends of contemporary urban sustainability and explores more dialogue opportunities between theory and practice in the complex research of contemporary cities. The development of urban sustainability is a dynamic relationship, which needs to be continuously studied among "trend", "practice" and "sustainable development" to contribute to the vision of sustainable urban development.
