The cloud pattern studied in this paper is an important of pattern in the traditional Chinese ornamentation art. The cloud pattern symbolizes auspiciousness, happiness, beauty, idealism, and sacredness in the hearts of ancestors.
Ru-yi cloud pattern(如意雲紋) came from the worship of celestial beings by the ancestors, then gradually added to the cultural meaning of wishing for blessing and then developed into a classical cloud pattern. This paper intends to discuss the changes in the cultural connotation and modeling style of the traditional cloud and thunder pattern, and hopes to summarize the results of the design. The theme of this research is named "Endless Happiness(長樂未央)". The term " Endless Happiness " is a common auspicious phrase used in the Han Dynasty, which means never ending happiness and joy. Often expressed in the decoration of utensils, in order to convey people's expectations of happiness. Since the implication represented by the moiré itself is auspicious, this ancient and elegant auspicious sentence is chosen as the subject of this creative study.
The importance of cloud pattern in Chinese decoration history can be observed from the development and evolution of Chinese traditional utensils. Regardless of the bronze wares in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, the lacquer ware of the Warring States period and even the Western Han Dynasty, or the various types of artifacts during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were a large number of cloud patterns. Classical cloud patterns have been inherited for thousands of years. We made experienced the evolution of different appearances and how wonderful performances in different periods of time on artifacts which will be discussed separately in the chapters of this article. With the inheritance of the ages, the varied cloud patterns and styles, there are many places worthy of our in-depth exploration. Among them are not only the spirit of the Chinese people’s admiration for the natural phenomena of the sky, but also the unique aesthetic and design spirit of Oriental culture. In this study, we will conduct a detailed analysis and discussion on moiré, and learn the essence and spirit of it as an idea for creation.
