J. F. Haydn reached the highest status and played a central role in the field of the composition of sacred oratorios. Haydn composed three major oratorios in his lifetime. This thesis is a study on Haydn’s late oratorio, The Creation, focusing on one of the three angelic roles of Gabriel, with the English version of the music score as the basic material of analysis and performance. The observation on the roles of the three angels, Adam and Eve in The Creation will be included, in addition to the analysis of Gabriel’s four recitatives and arias - their interpretations and roles in the entire composition. This thesis is divided into six major chapters: Chapter 1, the motive, approach and purpose of this research; Chapter 2, an overview of Haydn’s life and his vocal compositions; Chapter 3, a survey of the development of oratorios in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and an introduction to Haydn’s oratorios; Chapters 4 and 5, analysis of the composition of The Creation, the role of the angel Gabriel, the four recitatives and arias and their interpretations; and finally, Chapter 6, the conclusion.
