This study attempts to combine the factual and fictional elements in literature in terms of “pragmatism” and “pure aesthetics” and re-analyze the “reason for being” and “form of being” in terms of “mediation” and “the other.” Apart from mining the textual implications, this paper expands the discussion to the outer levels, that is, a Q&A regarding the being of “literature.” Kuo Sung-fen is the subject matter of this article. First is a brief analysis of Taiwan’s political situation in the 1960s, including the reaction of the literary world and circulation of publications, in order the discover his differences from the other writers through external observation. Then, his research and theories in his college life and as an activist are isolated to discern his ethical views and thought development. After examining how he associated with Sartre and Lu Xun through his manuscripts in the 1980s, his achievements in Sartre studies over decades and the problematic nature of his association with Sartre and Lu Xun are revealed to explore how mediation is achieved and ethics is practiced by literature. From this point, the views of Kuo’s theories are re-examined, starting from his theories on literature and art to discern the basis of his creation. Then, by analyzing his novels, the special “mediation style” in his novels is discussed while his maintenance on “the third path” is scrutinized. In addition, the transition from character mediation to literature mediation is also examined. Lastly, the researcher found that such a mediation transition is an act of “mediation” of “the other” to achieve the fusion and practice of literature and ethics.
