There are about 18,500 earthquakes in Taiwan each year, including many disastrous earthquakes. During the survey, many of the partition walls inside the old houses were built of bricks, and there were many windows or door openings to satisfy the usage. The literature also pointed out that brick walls with openings still has its ability to resist earthquakes. After the earthquake, the brick walls will be damaged, and its seismic capacity will be reduced. To ensure the seismic capacity of the brick walls and maintain the usability and safety of the old buildings, an effective and economical retrofitting method becomes important. This study aims to explore the retrofitting effect of different approaches on the brick infill with openings. This study tested five specimens, which are divided into two opening types. The two opening types have carbon fiber retrofitting and steel member retrofitting. According to the test results, the carbon fiber retrofitting can effectively hold the boundary of the brick infill, thereby improving the strength of the brick wall. However, the steel member reinforcement method may still have slippage damage to the weak surface where the opening is not continuous, and if the slippage is broken, the expected retrofitting effect cannot be achieved. The analytical model of this study uses a shear-bending failure column plus three or four-sided confinement of brick walls, which are superimposed on the same displacement. The strength prediction of the specimen is conservative and reasonable, but there is an underestimation before the displacement of the strength point and an overestimation after the retrofitting. This study tested five specimens, which are divided into two opening types. The two opening types have carbon fiber retrofitting and steel member retrofitting.
