As the world’s population move fast to the urban area, cities face many difficulties, including congested space, excessive waste, high ecological footprint, and et al. Sustainable urban development has become the focus of the world’s attention, and promoting sustainable cities has become a trend. Taipei, as the biggest city in Taiwan, is a residence of nearly 2 million people and face similar difficulties like other major cities. Therefore, constantly checking if Taipei is towards sustainable development becomes a crucial concern.
This study aims to build a composite sustainable development indicator system (SDIS) to investigate if Taipei develops on a sustainable trajectory. First, in order to build a SDIS for Taipei, this study refers the "Taiwan Sustainable Development Indicator System" promoted by the Sustainable Development Research Committee of Execute Yuan, and reviews the literature on the sustainable development of four major cities- Seattle, Landon, Soul, and Singapore. With considering the local problems of Taipei, the DPSIR structure (driver-pressure-state-impact-response) is adapted to build Taipei’s SDI. Second, with further considering data availability, a simple SDI is empirically built to investigate the sustainability of Taipei regarding to three aspects of economy, environment, and society. Finally, some suggestions to improve the sustainability of Taipei are provide.
