Kawanakazima centers around the young Walis, and depicts the relationship between master and slave, identitification and contradiction, and the disappearance of the aboriginal culture. The story continues in Zhan huo, in which the role of the aboriginal volunteer captain Lin is promoted to a level of equality due to his better adaptability than Japanese people on the battlefield. On the other hand, Lin faces problems in identity conversion due to the Japan’s losing the war.
This thesis discusses the content of the text through the analysis of scene, character image and events in Chung Chao-Cheng’s Kawanakazima and Zhan huo, and compares the text with historical materials, focusing on historical literature and aboriginal viewpoint to explore the two works. In terms of common themes, this thesis focuses on the change from assimilation to kominka, the comparison of the aborigines’ gaya spirit with the Japanese Yamato spirit, and life and death history in an attempt to uncover Zhong Yuzheng's exploration of human nature.
