In her seven years of career, she has served more than two thousand couples and has seen numerous conflicts between couples due to the role changes and their adjustments to the new families. These conflicts are resulted in premarital anxiety during wedding planning process, particularly the conflict about Chinese New Year’s Eve. The research team developed a premarital group counseling program based on Satir model, focusing on “How Do We Spend Our First Chinese New Year’s Eve?” based on gender role expectation, familyism and patriarchy in Chinese cultural background. The action research was conducted two program rounds. They were completed within one and half years with total of six couples participated. The program has been modified each time based on effects and feedbacks. Finally, it concluded and suggested that the best program structure was 16-hour-program on two consecutive days, which contains ten themes : Getting married, the Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner, a letter home, relationship boundary, dialogue with the maiden family, meditation, anxiety triggers, my first Chinese New Year’s Eve/reunion with the maiden family, and vision for the future Lunar New Year, summary and reflection. The aim of the group is to fulfill the following purposes: Helping the engaged couples understand the differences between families of their origin, establishing boundaries between families of their origin and their own nuclear family, clarifying the expectations of their new role in marriage, sharing their premarital anxiety and supporting each other to adjust, and eventually creating a shared vision for Lunar New Year within each wedded couple as well as preparation of marriage life. The structure of the thesis consists of two parts. The first part describes the formal group in a narrative way, and the second part presents complete action process and reflections with an action research structure.
