This study aims at exploring the cultures of smartphone use of high school students in Taiwan. Furthermore, the study discusses the observation results from a gender perspective in hope of developing a more in-depth understanding layered underneath the general student culture. A series of focus group interviews were carried out to understand what roles smartphones play in the day-to-day school life and the learning experiences of high school students. The analysis process was also completed by the support of classroom observation and questionnaires. It was clear to notice that smart phones have become the main access to interpersonal interaction among high school students. However, different preferences and cultures of smartphone use were found from the study. Male students showed more interests in phone games while female students value the functions of social and camera applications more. Male students bond over playing games and female students tend to get social recognition from social media and pictures. Smartphones may bring ignorance to students’ interpersonal relationship in real life, or even distract students from their studies. This study suggests that if learning could be tailored to students’ learning preferences. The advanced functions of smartphones could encourage more learning from students. When students are able to combine hobbies with learning habits, their learning would become more relative and meaningful. 張建成 2019 學位論文 ; thesis 247 zh-TW
