In addition to the fifteen classic masterpieces for flute solo, his works covered chamber music, orchestra pieces, operas, ballet music, and bagatelle as well. He composed this Ballade for flute and piano in 1927. There are graceful melodies and plentiful colors of tone in the piece, making it enjoyable for soloists to perform and appreciate the gorgeous techniques, as well as the diverse changing of the sounds. There are six chapters in the essay. Firstly, it explains the definitions of the research scope and aspect as well as the research motivations in the first chapter. Secondly, there is a brief introduction of French contemporary masterpieces for flute solo and representative composers, to probe into French contemporary music development and the distinctions of the composers’ works. Thirdly, it introduces Philippe Gaubert’s life, his background, and his music characteristics. Fourthly, it is an analysis of the Ballade for Flute and Piano, which aims at its tonality, form, motive, harmony, and melody. The author provides her personal opinions of musical interpretation from self-performing experiences referencing the outcome of the music analysis in chapter five. And last, after summarizing the previous chapters, the suggestions and conclusion are provided for flute soloists, instructors, and researchers as a referencing material.
