Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 教育學系 === 107 === This study aims to investigate the condition of new immigrant children attending High Mark (pseudonym) Cram School at Taichung, and the research participants are five new immigrant mothers whose children have attended High Mark Cram School. All data were collected primarily through interviews and supplemented by participant observation. Findings of the study are elaborated in the following three aspects: the reasons, principles of new immigrant mothers sending their children to cram school, and the communication medium role played by the cram school between new immigrant parents and school teachers. The three aspects are respectively described as follows:
1. The reasons for immigrant mothers sending children to cram school include that most of the mothers are incapable of helping children learning due to cultural differences; some fathers fail to offer any help because of literacy inability or being busy at work; other family members can’t extend timely guidance when children encounter difficulties, out of their indifference to academic achievements; cram school can provide schoolwork guidance; safe venue for out-of-class activities provided by the cram school; and reducing parental conflicts and maintaining harmonious family atmosphere.
2. The principles for immigrant mothers selecting cram school include qualified teaching staff, good service attitude, safe environment and comprehensive facilities, reasonable tuition, and good word-of-mouth reputation.
3. Communication medium role played by the cram school: High Mark Cram School plays triple roles of bridge, transmitter, and supporter between parents and teachers, creating an intimate no-distance relationship between school teachers and new immigrant parents.
