Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 教師專業碩士學位學程 === 107 === The purpose of this action research was to explore the effect of competency-based English teaching on English learning motivation and English speaking ability of students of Rural Area. The subjects were 7 fourth-graders in Jinxing elementary (alias). They had participated in this project for 10 weeks.
The teaching material was two picture book “I’m rocking in my school!” and “Red Rocket and Rainbow Jelly”, and uses the English Learning Motivation Scale and the Cambridge Children's English Certification to test the performance of the students. The researcher examined students’ English learning motivation and speaking ability in the first week. The second week to the fifth week was the first cycle. The sixth week to the ninth week was the second cycle. The tenth week researcher examined students’ English learning motivation and speaking ability again. After the research, in addition to analyzing the changes in the quantitative data of the students' English learning motivation and oral ability before and after the test, the researcher also analyzes the qualitative data such as students’ feedback record, the observation record and the teaching reflection notes. The conclusions of the research were summarized as follows:
1. The problem to link between competency and applied English is not easy to solve with teacher’s individual guidance.
2. Competency-based teaching exploration could help the students in Elementary School of Rural Area to develop English learning motivation.
3. Competency-based teaching exploration could help the students in Elementary School of Rural Area to develop their English speaking ability.
4. The competency-based curriculum combines multiple aspects, so the teacher needs to reduce the content and focus on teaching objectives.
