This research object is a class of 24 fifth graders in an elementary school in Taichung City. The researcher uses the concept of disaster prevention in mountain torrents and mud flows to implement teaching. The materials collected during this study included work sheets, teaching logs, checklists, teaching observation records, teaching videos, interviews, and so on. The data is adopted for qualitative analysis and there were shown three study results. (1) The target students (24 fifth graders) acquire and make good use of skills learned in this scientific inquiry skills in POE course. It was found that they could only simple answers grow to logical report after three of the mountain torrents and mud flows classes. That was shown the target students who are encouraged to apply skills learned to think and solve problems by the POE course. (2) There were difficulties for the fifth graders to learn the abstract and un-manipulate concepts. They could learn more easily, if presented as a “live” teaching circumstance in a classroom. Therefore, suitable media and smaller questions by the researcher for reference were successfully solving this problem. (3) During the research period, the researcher has a significant growth and change in the professional knowledge and teaching methods in science education, and by keeping the teaching reflection log, the researcher is sure to continue his self-enrichment in science teaching through qualitative researches. Finally, according to the research results, the teaching methods and curriculum of teaching materials are separately discussed, and the effectiveness of the mountain flood and mudflows disaster prevention courses on the implementation of the fifth-graders of elementary school is discussed. It is suggested that the POE disaster prevention course could be integrated into the science curriculum in elementary school level, which can enhance the students’ level of disaster prevention and increase the learning interesting and scientific inquiry skills.
